This catalog was published in conjunction with the art exhibition presented by the San Diego Historical Society at the Museum of San Diego History in Balboa Park from June18 to July 31, 1988. Alfred R. Mitchell was the first painter of significance to start his career in San Diego. Since his first instruction in art with Maurice Braun at the San Diego Academy of Art in 1913, Mitchell's ability and reputation continued to grow until his retirement in 1966, at which time he was referred to as "dean" of San Diego painters.
