EPICA's 30th Anniversary Anthology, Volume I, The Globalization of Hope

The Globalization of Hope is the fruit of eight years of work by EPICA staff on Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The book charts a difficult transition in Central America from popular struggles for liberation to local struggles for survival. Neoliberalism's impact on the poor is examined, as is the struggle of the poor to develop a global alternative. The emergence of new social movements is highlighted, from the struggle for indigenous autonomy in Chiapas to the empowerment of women in the global economy. Human rights violations in Honduras and the victimization of Panamanians during the US invasion are discussed. The legacy of US intervention in Haiti and Cuba is outlined, as is the poltical economy of US-Mexican border policy. A final section highlights the need for a globalization from below.
