Cummins Elliott Speakman, Jr. was born in Delaware in 1912, and since 1967 has made his home on Maui close by the beach where King Ka-heckill welcomed the tall ships of Captain Cook more than two hundred years ago. His career has included public relations, service in World War II, university studies, and teaching and academic administration in the United States and abroad. Dr. Speakman came to Maui as President of Maunaolu College of Maui (1967-1971) and is the author of a history of international exchange in education. In recent years, he has been consultant to several educational institutions in Hawaii, where he continues his research in local and Pacific history.
