Art of the Mediterranean world, A.D. 100 to 1400 (Art history series)
Description:
Excerpt from the Preface: Colleagues and students of Hugo Buchthal have realized for years that a significant part of his work - numerous substantial articles scattered through a wide range of journals - has become relatively inaccessible. Convinced that the republication of these contributions would be of genuine service, we conceived the idea of preparing a collection of selected studies. Such a volume will serve the useful purpose of restoring or making more familiar to a wider readership the diverse facets of Buchthal's scholarly interests and the breadth of his learning over many years of productive research. We also hope that it will be a personal tribute, however modest, to this extraordinary and colorful man and scholar. Selection of suitable articles was the first responsibility of the editorial committee, a small group of his former students. Our criteria in choosing the seventeen papers reprinted here were that they should be contributions to the discipline and that they stand today independently and on their own merits.
