Berta Broadfoot and Pepin the Short: A Merovingian Romance
Description:
This book deals with events that occurred in eighth century France - the marriage of Princess Berta of Hungary to Pepin the Short of France. The story concerns an evil servant who orders that Berta be slain in the woods and then substitutes her own daughter in the bridal bed. However, Berta escapes and the heart of a wild boar is brought back as proof of Berta's death. The two girls resemble each other, save for the size of their feet. Here are the roots of two fairytales, Cinderella and Snow White, eleven hundred years before the Brothers Grimm. Pepin and Berta (known historically as Berta Broadfoot), eventually become the parents of Charlemgne.
