9780915348077
Description:
This is the second edition of this book (it does not include the four full page glossy color photographs found in the 1963 first edition). In this volume, CERA provides a detailed history of the North Shore Line (the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railway) after 1926, examining its expansion, growth, and challenges until its demise in 1963. (The pre-1926 history can be found in CERA Bulletin 105, "Interurban to Milwaukee.") The book covers every aspect of the North Shore's history, from the electrical plants to the novel piggyback freight service, from labor disputes to the elimination of grade crossings. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos that show interiors as well as exteriors of the cars and bring the towns they passed through back to life. This is another excellent CERA publication with numerous well-done maps, schematic car diagrams, rosters, timetables and advertisements. 188 pages.
