GENERAL TREATMENT OF FEVER. It is always safest to begin the treatment as soon as the symptoms of fever make their appearance. If the patient feels languid, with a sense of weakness, all business and cares should be laid aside, and he should rest until he is well. On going to bed, he should bathe his feet in hot water and drink freely of hot lemonade, or if desirable, plenty of cold water. If the appetite is poor, he should fast for one or two meals. Should there be sickness at the stomach, a vomit, by drinking two or three pints of tepid or hot water, and tickling the throat with a feather or the fingers will free the stomach of the offending matter. Should there be constipation of the bowels, they should be opened by an enema of tepid water or with a mild cathartic. If there is a hot or dry skin, or he has a headache, a hot or sponge bath should be used, in which a few spoonsful of salt or soda is dissolved. The temperature of the water should be agreeable to his feelings. If agreeable to him, cold water should be applied to the head, otherwise warm or hot.
