"These biographical Studies of Robert E. Lee by Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens first appeared in magazines shortly after their deaths. Davis' article was published in the North American Review in 1890 and Stephens study in Southern Bivouac in 1883. These were probably the last formal pieces of hitorical writing to come from the pens of Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens."
