Beaches of Sonora

Sonora, the most northwestern state of hte mainland of Mexico, has some thousand miles of beachland along its open coast and with its bays and esteros. Some half dozen of the named beaches arer reached by paved roads and most of these are fairly well known to tourists - in fact, to most these are the beaches of Sonora. These include such spots as El Golfo, Puerto Penasco, Babia Kino, San Carlos and Guaymas. Here one will find good to even luxurious accommodations, and it is to these that the average norteamericano goes when he "does" Sonora. At the other extreme are the long dusty approaches to such spots as Puerto Lobos and Puerto Libertad, yet many drive large campers to these beaches and the natives make the trip in old beat-up passenger cars and pickups. In between are any number of beaches, well known and unsed by the Sonorese, many with extensive colonies of well-built homes. These are usually reached over well-graded roads and several of these are being paved. These include such resorts as Las Bocas, Huatabampito, Agiabampo, etc. It is the rare traveler from north of the border who has ever heard of these. Finally there is the land of the Seris, which can be reaches over good to fair roads which take only reasonable skill.
