The Shetland Dictionary

This long-awaited Shetland Dictionary, the first large-scale study of the Shetland dialect since Jakobsen's work in the early years of this century, provides both an authoritative reference book and a working dictionary. An introduction covers history, pronunciation, etymology and grammar; the main word-list gives over three thousand Shetland words still in use with their English equivalents; and an English - Shetland section is designed to give non-Shetland speakers a grounding in Shetland dialect and idiom.
