Barrows in the Peak District: Recent Research (Uk/Ne-bur)
Description:
The fieldwork and analysis carried out for the Derbyshire Archaeological Advisory Committee in 1988-89 incorporated assessment of every monument in the Peak District which was recorded in the Couinty Sites and Monuments Record as a barrow or possible barrow. Aims included recording the present state of each monument and assessment of present and future threats, as well as assimilation of data from previous excavations. Many sites had not been visited for decades: others had to be reinterpreted, and new correlations between sites and antiquarians' excavation reports were made. The volume includes a thorough analysis of the barrows, with a detailed overview of extant sites and past excavations, multiphased barrows and a case-study of a bronze-age barrow at Hognaston, plus a comprehensive corpus of all sites.
