From America to United States: In Four Parts
Description:
From America to United States: In four parts: the history of the merchant ship types built in the United States of America under long-range programme of the Maritime Commission; Part 1 of 4.\nThe Maritime Commission began to revitalise the United States Merchant Marine in 1937, by ordering the liner AMERICA. Its programme of cargo ship building was increased at the outbreak of war in Europe and greatly expanded after America entered the war -- not only to supply the merchant shipping needs of the Allies, but also to provide essential naval support craft, including carriers (CVE\'s) and even frigates (PF\'s). The ending of hostilities saw the disposal of much of this great fleet, but the Commission\'s work was not finished until the commissioning of the liner UNITED STATES in 1952.
