Class and colour in South Africa, 1850-1950

The intensification of the liberation struggle in South Africa has led to a renewed demand for this book. As a critical analysis of the Labour and National Movements in South Africa it is a classic study incorporating much material drawn from primary hitherto untapped sources. While it has become essential reading for those engaged in the struggle for South African liberation, it is also an invaluable textbook for students of race relations, colonial nationalism, the class theory and South African history. This reprint by IDAF takes the place of the original edition published by Penguin African Library in 1969. The authors, both prominent members of the Communist Party of South Africa until it was banned in 1950, have first hand knowledge of many events described in this book. Politically exiled from South Africa in 1965, they now live in Zambia.
