Scent, or perfume as Shakespeare preferred to call it, has from the beginning of history been a symbol of luxury and wealth. It was the most highly prized of all possessions in the ancient world. Tutankhamun was buried with 400 litres of fragrant oils which to him would have been more valuable than all the other treasures entombed with him.
