Stonehenge when first seen from afar appears insignificant, lost in the expanse of ti's downland landscape, and only comes tto it's full magnificense when approached at close quarters. It is the remains of this all inspiring which promps it's visitors to ask what meaning and purpose it had for the many communities who carried out it's progressive development over more than a thousand years.
