The first of a series which covers all of Scotland, this volume is intended to be as comprehensive a compendium as possible of the fortified houses of Berwickshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Peeblesshire, Roxburghshire, Selkrikshire, and West Lothian. The aspect, situation, special features, and history of each house are described briefly and in plain terms. A pen and ink sketch of each by the author accompanies the description.
