Llechi =: Slate

The slate industry, once the lifeblood of much of Snowdonia, is now almost dead, but its towering waste tips, mysterious tunnels, water-filled pits and rusting machines enshrine memories for local inhabitants and excite curiosity amongst visitors. This selection of old photographs, by recapturing something of the spirit of the quarryman and the techniques he used, breathes life into the dry bones of the quarries.
