This chronological guide is divided into two parts, focusing in turn on the empires of Rome and Byzantium. For each empire, an alphabetical list of emperors, empresses and princes is followed by an expanded list of emperors, most illustrated by a portrait coin, and giving details of their full name, dates, means of succession, family relationship, cause and place of death and length of reign. Family trees are shown for all the major dynasties and each section ends with a chronological list of rulers and dates. The book is aimed at collectors of coins and students of ancient history.
