Description:
For nearly a century public interest in the Civil War focused on the primary areas of military combat in the self, the Southeast, in the north. During the Centennial commemoration of the conflict, this attention broadened to include the war in the West, the vast region be on the Mississippi River. Collectively, this includes 9 states and 11 territories. Because the states involved were treated earlier in similar context, the present study is limited to the 11 territories of the trans-Mississippi West of the Civil War years. A few specialized studies have appeared, notably biographical and military accounts, concerning the war in the West, but the contributions and problems of the 11 territories during the conflict have not been considered collectively before this presentation. Every effort is made here on to treat the total history and culture of each of the territories of the Civil War. And their varied aspects.
