Description:

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts continues to demonstrate encouragement and support for contemporary southeastern artists with the current offering from our series of regional biennial exhibitions. The "1994 Montgomery Biennial: Chiaroscuro—A Contemporary Study of Light and Dark" is a compelling survey of contemporary art activity which features twenty-five southeastern artists who are as diverse and multi-faceted as the region itself. Emotionally charged, dramatic imagery characterizes the work of the artists selected for this exhibition. The play of opposites, particularly in terms of light and dark, inspired the use of the word Chiaroscuro as the title for the 1994 Montgomery Biennial. Visually, psychologically, and emotionally, each of the artists delved into the mysterious realm of opposing forces and the resulting collection of works is both seductive and disturbing. The artists included in this exhibition are Julio Antonio, Joseph Barron, David Bartlett, Bette Bates, Walter Beckham, Mario Bencomo, Louis Zoellar Bickett, Gary Chapman, Stephen Chesley, Michael Crespo, Jerry Cutler, Demi, Be Gardiner, Marcia Isaacson, Dale Kennington, Juan Logan, Ruth Ava Lyons, Rocio Rodriguez, James Rosen, Michael Sastre, Onajide A. Shabaka, Tom Stanley, Phyllis Stapler, Richard Stenhouse, and Russell Weedman.
