As a result of our conversations in both the public and private sectors with librarians, state and local labor officials, and other professionals across the United States, Bernan Press decided to publish a value added addition of the dictionary of occupational titles (DOT), originally published in softcover by the U.S. Dept of labor. While still preserving the occupational definitions in their original form, we have tried to make the DOT more user friendly. We have added a durable binding, designed to withstand frequent use. Also, we have grouped all of the occupational definitions into the first volume, and placed a glossary, Appendices, and indexes in the second volume for easier cross reference. Furthermore, we have added the occupational category to the top of each page in the occupational definitions chapters, thus making searching much faster. We are sure that readers will find these changes will add years to the lifespan of the volumes and will, at the same time, facilitate their Use. The fourth edition of the DOT published in 1977, contained over 2100 new occupational definitions and several thousand other definitions were substantially modified or combined with related definitions. In order to document these changes, 75,000 Onsight job analysis studies were conducted from 1965 to the mid 1970s. These studies, supplemented by information obtained through extensive contacts with professional and trade associations, reflected the restructuring of the economy at that time. Two supplements to the DOT have been released since the publication of the 1977 4th edition of the DOT, one in 1982 and one in 1986. The 1982 supplement contained titles, codes, and definitions of derived from Occupational Code Requests submitted by DOT users to local job service offices.
