My Ocean: A Novel of Cuba

When his grandparents decide to join his uncle in the United States, 12-year-old Enrique is full of questions. Why do they have to leave Cuba to go to the United States? Should he and his mother go too? If they don’t, what will life be like for them? More and more, Enrique is drawn into the world of the Pioneers the first step to becoming a young communist and a person with a future in Cuba. But being a Pioneer means he can never have any contact with his grandparents or his uncle. Throughout Enrique's struggles the ocean remains his steadfast friend, a place he can go in good times and bad as he tries to find a way to understand the life he is leading and the choices that confront him, his family, and so many other Cubans.
