Most works on east central Europe have either ended or begun with the year 1918, thus leaving the reader wondering what happened to the fragments of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, or confused by the bewildering domestic and foreign problems confronting the successor states. This book is dedicated to the proposition that neither the Monarchy nor its legacy can be properly understood without careful comparisons between the pre-World War I and interwar years.
