The first edition (1980) is cited in Sheehy . This revision brings the present version of the checklist into accordance with current botanical nomenclature and establishes a taxonomic and nomenclatural framework to accommodate the diverse needs of a large community of users. It expands the number of accepted names and synonyms by nearly 20,000 entries or approximately one-third of its original content. The geographic area treated is the continental US, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands; Canada; the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon; and Greenland.
