Gentians

Gentians, along with edelweiss, are the very archetypes of alpine plants. Mostly blue and frequently difficult to grow, gentians pose an irresistible challenge to the alpine gardener, but among the 400 species of Gentiana are plants that can be grown in a variety of conditions. There are many summer-flowering species in subtle colors and a wide range of fall-flowering hybrids from China.
