Based on a study seeking clues by which a surgeon correcting deformities of the ear can predict the location of, and so avoid severing, the facial nerve, thus avoiding paralysis of the face. The study won the 1989 Edmund Price Fowler Award for basic research presented by the American Rhinological, Laryngological, and Otological (Triological) Society.
