The Development of American Gastroenterology

This volume traces the evolution of American gastroenterology from its beginnings in colonial America to the present time. Included are fascinating accounts of William Beaumont's observations on Alexis St. Martin, the subsequent growth of gastrointestinal physiology, the beginnings of gastrointestinal roentgenology, and the introduction and evolution of gastrointestinal endoscopy. Close attention is also given to the emergence of gastroenterology as a specialty, the rise of gastroenterology publications, the formation of American and world gastroenterologic organizations, and the growth, after World War II, of research and training programs supported by the National Institutes of Health.
