The original edition of this work appeared in 1980 and, although it ran counter to the grain of the times, it was fairly well received. When it went out of print in 1988, a number of scholars including Rob Sampson, Dave Kalinich, and Doug Thomson were kind enough to urge its resuscitation and Neil Rowe of Waveland was courageous enough to risk this paperback edition.
