Description:
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation acquired a small collection of various kinds of floor covering used by early Virginians. A selection of forty-nine items from the collection appears in this volume. Each is shown in full-color, full-page illustrations - with supplementary detail shots in some cases. Complete technical detail accompanies each - its construction, condition, and the intricacies of its design. With refreshing candor the author reviews very briefly the history of carpet making in England and the Near and Middle East over the past centuries as well as the documentation for carpeting in colonial Virginia. Being in the strict sense a catalog, the bulk of the work deals with specific carpets rather than carpets in general. Hardcover with blue and teal cloth boards in dust jacket.
