This volume contains the complete unexpurgerated text of D.H. Lawrence's greatest work of short fiction, never previously published in its entirety. The water color reproduced on the cover was painted by the author expressly for this story. An appendix includes 28 previously unpublished letters by Lawrence to various correspondents written in regard to the publication of The Escaped Cock, plus the complete text of the first version of this story as published in The Forum magazine in 1928 and never before reprinted. There is also commentary by the editor discussing the genesis and evolution of this text. F.R. Leavis has called D.H.Lawrence, "The great creative genius of our age, and one of the greatest figures in English Literature."
