The present book in an English translation and expansion of the book I originally published in German in 1979. It is the outgrowth of my psychotherapeutic and research work started in Europe in the early fifties and carried on in the United States and Europe ever since, and of my teaching clinical psychology and psychotherapy for more than thirty years.
