This reference, whose own history extends back to 1928, has been revised and expanded since the 5th edition of 1982, and now comprises 5,473 entries with about 1,100 more names mentioned in the text. Dates are given for first recorded use as well as the reasons for the choice of names, and often other interesting information. Regrettably, the compiler, who is pleased to include "Whorehouse Meadow," omits mention of "Cock Rock," preferring the censorial "Rooster Rock" presumably a sop to Oregon bluenoses.
