In Search of Steenie Bergman (Soderberg Series, No 5)

In another romp through the Old West, master storytellers Blaine and Brenton Yorgason describes the teenage years of Jons Soderberg (later Bishop Soderberg In The Bishop's Horse Race). Jons has fallen in love with the beautiful Steenie Bergman, wise beyond her years. But Steenie's step-uncle Ben Crost has decided he wants nothing more to do with the Mormons. So he leaves the Salt Lake Valley, taking his family - and Steenie - with him. Steenie, however, has left a note to Jons, hoping he will rescue her and bring her back. Jons has several problems, though, not the least of which is the federal army that is fast approaching Salt Lake City. Still, with the help of crusty old Gideon Monson, a half-wild dog named Lazarus, and a little gray mustang named Perdy, Jons perseveres to find his true love - and learns some lessons about faith in the process.
