Description:

Reproductions of the Boston Public Library Manuscript and the Carlos Maria de Bustamante 1840 Eddition. From the book's Introduction: "In 1585, the Franciscan Friar Bernardino de Sahagun finished the revision of his narrative entitled ( English translation), "Account of the Conquest of New Spain, as the Indian Soldiers who were Present Told It." Fray Bernardino was instrumental in preserving information about Aztec culture, using Mexican Indian informants and working in their native language of Nahuatl. His intention was to understand native culture, especially religious beliefs, so that Christian evangelization would be more effective.... The zenith of his scholarly efforts was the composition of the General History of the Things of New Spain, a twelve-volume compilation of texts in Nahuatl and Spanish, with illustrations by native scribes. It deals mainly with religious matters, natural history, and social structure. The final volume is an account of the Conquest of Mexico (1519-21)."
