Lloyd Irland provides a balanced, nontechnical look at the whole range of forest-related issues. Three themes run throughout: the changing character, extent, and ownership of New England's forests since white settlement; the evolving meanings of the forests to the region's communities; and finally a look at the five types of forest- suburban, recreational, rural, industrial and wilderness - in terms of changing trends, future outlooks, and policy issues.
