Forsyth combined an eighteenth-century taste with an openness to new forms. His intelligent firsthand observations and historical reflections were informed, skeptical, inquiring, trenchant, and witty. This edition discusses these matters (using unpublished material), translates and sources all his quotations, provides brief lives of 450 individuals mentioned, annotates political and cultural references, and has a full bibliographical apparatus.
