Author Tatiana Proskouriakoff (1909-1985) was a Russian-American Mayanist scholar and archaeologist who contributed significantly to the deciphering of Maya hieroglyphs, the writing system of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica. After transforming her field of specialty, she went on in this work to write the exemplary catalog for what is considered the most difficult museum collection in that field.
