This book is an introduction, and therefore its purpose is to provide point of entry for those for whom librarianship, as an anticipated career, is only beginning to be understood. But it is also a personal book, as it must be, for no two people view the same scene with identical predispositions and from the same point of view. The author has attempted to broaden its scope by inviting assistance with some of the chapters. But these contributors, too, have brought to their task their own emphases and their own enthusiasms. The book is intended to be not a philosophy of librarianship, but a testament to the depth, richness, and comprehensiveness of librarianship as a career.
