Description:
This book contains Terzaghi Lectures presented in 1974 through 1982 (with the exception of the lecture presented in 1978 by the late Professor N. M. Newmark). These lectures, presented in honor of Dr. Karl Terzaghi, represent diverse aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. One paper discusses the relationship of geology and geotechnical engineering and states that a study of the geology of engineering sites is an important starting point for all geotechnical site studies. Other lectures cover effects of dynamic soil properties on soil-structure interaction, bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations, design and construction of drilled shafts, and evaluating calculated risk in geotechnical engineering. A paper on investigation of failures proposes the establishment of a national center for investigating civil engineering failures and presents several case studies. Another paper presents studies of pre-Columbian earth construction in the Americas, and discusses technological developments between 2,500 and 500 years ago. Finally, recent progress in the design and construction of concrete-face rockfill dams is outlined and documented.
