Differentiated Supervision
Description:
In this book, Allan Glatthorn examines differentiated supervision, an approach
to supervision that provides teachers with options about the kinds of supervisory and evaluative
services they receive. In general, the differentiated model offers intensive development to
nontenured teachers and to tenured teachers with serious problems. The rest of the faculty receive
options about how they foster their professional development, working in collaborative teams in
a cooperative development approach or using a self-directed approach. The evaluation processes
are also differentiated, depending upon tenure status and competence.
Glatthorn arranges the chapters under four broad topics: the foundations of differentiated
supervision; the developmental options, which can be used in a cooperative or a self-directed
approach; the evaluative options, which focus on models that promote growth; and the process
approach that Glatthorn recommends to help a school or district develop its own "homegrown"
differentiated model.
