During the early 1900s the promise of employment in the great coalfields of northern West Virginia drew numerous immigrants from the poorer countries of Europe. Miners came to the state from Ireland & Spain, the Italian peninsula, the Balkans, Austria, Poland, Russia & Turkey. They brought with them many of the tales & legends of their homelands, which were preserved among themselves & children.
