The 1940s (Picture History of the 20th Century)

Part of a series providing a photographic survey of this century, decade by decade. Each book touches on issues and events that made the headlines, before exploring themes such as fashion, films, music and sport. "The 1940's" looks at the nature of the World War II and its aftermath of austerity and reconstruction, the roles that both men and women played, and the effects on family life. There were triumphs and disasters both on land and at sea which culminated in final victory. Then it was time of change for Europe and indeed the rest of the World. It was also a decade showing the advent of atomic power and the bombing of Hiroshima.
