"Gur Cake & Coal Blocks" this is Eamonn MacThomais' famous book about growing up and starting to work. In the days before packaging, Dubliners all slabs of Gur Cake, burned Coal Blocks sold from a horse and cart, and drank 'loose milk' from the churn and sold sweets and biscuits from large glass jars. MacThomais vividly recalls the old electric trams, queuing up with jam jars (as payment) for the four Penny Rush at the cinema, traditional cures and herbs for all ailments-- and starting work at 7 AM with the horses of the White Heather Laundry.
