A dictionary of classical reference in English poetry
Description:
This dictionary contains virtually all the classical references in some 80 English poets - subject to some qualification. In most cases there is a paragraph which defines the subject as it appears in the subsequent references, and these paragraphs are usually followed by indications of the main source for the subject. The second part of the book lists all the poets and poems cited, together with the references made. Thus, several purposes and approaches are possible. You might, for example, be interested in the substance and poetic use of a myth by one or more poets (possibly compared), in which case you would consult the first section; or you might be interested in the meaning of a line or series of lines, in which case you could consult either section; or, if you were concerned as to the frequency and nature of allusion in the work of a poet or in a poem, you would go to the second part, the author index.
