In this third volume of his diaries, written in the years 1946 and 1947, James Lees-Milne continues his perambulations round England on behalf of the National Trust. The content, as before, mixes learning light worn with social and literary gossip of the most compelling kind. In London he encounters -- among many others -- Ivy Compton-Burnett and Margaret Jourdain, Harold Nicolson, the Pope-Hennessys, Nancy Mitford and the "boisterous and argumentative" Randolph Churchill.
