In 1934 advance design work began on battleships for the Royal Navy, to replace the ageing units of the Queen Elizabeth and Royal Sovereign classes. Under the terms of the Washington and London Treaties standard displacement was restricted to 35,000 tons (i.e. fully equipped for sea but lacking fuel and feed water), and gun-calibre to 16 inches. But a year later, in 1935, a third naval conference was convened, and as a result a new limit on gun-calibre, 14 inches, was agreed upon. However ....
