Harriet Martineau: First Woman Sociologist (Berg Women's Series)

Harriet Martineau (1802-76) was in many respects a daughter of the Enlightenment. Born into a manufacturing family of Unitarian commitment, Martineau received a good education for a woman of her day, which served her resolve to write about the social issues of the time. In this biography Martineau's life and work are examined in the light of her contributions to social science, particuarly political economy and sociology.
