"In June 1648 the Tower Guard was formed as part of The Trained Bands of The Tower of London and its Hamlets. The Regiment took the name of its Colonel and was also known as The Tower Regiment of Foot, and it formed part of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army. On October 11th 1669 George Legge was appointed Captain of an Independent Company, and on December 7th 1670 he was appointed Lieutenant General of Ordnance, and Master General in March 1685, all within the Tower where the King's Ordnance was commissioned and Manufactured. He also commanded a Regiment of Foot which bore his name from February 18th, 1678 to its disbandment in 1679. George Legge was appointed Constable of The Tower on May 2nd 1685 and as such he also had the additional role of Officer Commanding The Tower Hamlets Militia whose successors would become The 4th Volunteer Battalion Royal Fusiliers in 1903."
