Introductory note: "Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949) was known by many of his celebrated contemporaries as the 'Magician of Venice'. Born in Granada of an illustrious family of Spanish painters, he was a man of prodigious talent and wide-ranging interests. Though known today primarily as a dress and fabric designer, Fortuny was also a painter, engraver, architect, protographer, set designer, lighting technician, inventor and impresario. He was a rare mixture of scientist, artist and craftsman who personified the ideal of the Renaissance man in an age of increasingly narrow specialization."
