Lost at Sea: Great Shipwrecks of History
Description:
Fantastic, full-color reproduction of "The Shipwreck" on front of dj by the great J.M.W. Turner. 1996, SMITHMARK PUBLISHERS, NY. Oversize hardcover reprint edition, 128 pages. This is a very tall, handsome book, 124 total full-color illustrations, mainly vintage paintings with some full-color photos throughout. The author has written over 40 books on a variety of subjects. He is quite famous because following his army service, he worked as a cinema manager before becoming a private detective. He then went into journalism and has warped the world with his books. This is a lovely work, going back throughout history, describing the wrecks of ancient vessels to modern times. The many reasons for shipwrecks can be traced to collisions, explosions, poor navigation, faulty ship design, human error, and worst of all, plain old bad luck. A beautiful volume, handsomely produced.
